A New Day

Just next to the Le petit coin du livre du village is the Palais des crêpes (palace of pancakes). The diner workers will be quite shocked to serve a heavy full course meal for only two guests, but Madeline and Giselle are familiar faces to the business. Every visit, the workers and other restaurant guests alike are shocked to see a young girl have the appetite to eat all of the food! Giselle smiles every time as she is reminded of her younger self joyfully eating all the pancakes and bacon when she was younger. Palais des crêpes is a nostalgic place for old Giselle, and she is overjoyed to see Madeline act just like she did many years ago.

The final project for my specialization class is to create a scene from the story we chose. One of the scenes we are tasked to illustrate from le temps n'attend personne is Madeline and Giselle in their early morning routine having breakfast. I always want to try out different and unexpected ideas with the assignment, like drawing teen Madeline as a pop punk man pixie dream girl, and Giselle as a no nonsense, serious but loving grandmother. My idea of tackling this scene differently was instead of illustrating the scene of the two characters having breakfast in their home, I had the idea to make the scene take place in the cafe/diner next door, where I mentioned Madeline and Giselle start many of their days and have been loyal customers for years.

This was a good chance for me to start learning how to draw food digitally. One of the first critiques I received from the prof was to populate the table wither even more food! The more the merrier! I did some research for references of breakfast diner menu items, so I drew the most popular breakfast foods; pancakes, waffles, bacon and eggs.
